Westhaven Community "A Ministry of the Evangelical Free Church" strives to be a premier Christ-centered facility with an emphasis on each individual's spiritual care. Westhaven Community is dedicated to providing our residents the highest practicable quality care and services that allows each individual to feel loved and comfortable in a clean, homelike environment. We offer a holistic approach in which each resident will be treated with dignity, respect and sensitivity to his/her individual needs as a whole person.
We believe in support and emphasize a management philosophy that provides a positive, professional working environment for our associates in order to maintain the highest quality of staff, while being committed to the fiscal responsibility of our home.
In 1910, Rev. Edward Thorell, on his way to the annual conference in Boone, stopped in Kearney, Nebraska, to see a brother minister, Rev. L.M. Ekman. Rev. Ekman had given his life to preaching the Gospel and now, in his final years, had no real home or means of support. This so stirred Rev. Thorell that while at the annual conference, he rose on the floor and told Rev. Ekman's story. His speech moved the delegates so much so that they decided to build a home.
Boone, Iowa, site of the first conference of the Evangelical Free Church of America (Swedish) in 1884, was the site chosen. The Free Church in Boone donated the site, the local chamber of commerce contributed $5,000 and money was gathered from our churches - and in 1912, a two-story building was erected. A mere eight years later, another story was added.
Rev. Ekman, then in Kearney, was one of the first residents to enjoy the care and comfort of the home.
Where We Are Now
Today, our home is a 100 bed, Medicare and Medicaid certified facility that offers medical, social, dietary and spiritual care. We accept Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance and private pay and offer residents services to enhance the quality of their lives. And that's just the beginning. Call us for a tour
What We Have Done
Phase One of the building process consisted of building our new nursing home. Phase One was completed in 2010 and opened in August of that year. Our assisted living building was Phase Two. Phase Two is also completed and opened October 2011.
The reason for the updates to Westhaven Community is to enhance the quality of life for each and every resident and to provide a continuum of services. And now, 100 years later after our beginning, our vision continues to be the same as in the past - to encourage and support residents in an atmosphere of Christian love, compassion and understanding. Westhaven Community Board members and staff are also aware of our responsibility to our community and are thankful for the support over the years. We remember the numerous people who have been involved in many different capacities with us and thank each of them with all our hearts and keep them in our prayers. We would appreciate your prayers as we continue to provide care for the body, mind and spirit of our residents.
